Supervision is central to counsellor and psychotherapist training and practice. Supervisors play a key role in assessing trainees’ ability to integrate theory into practice, reflect critically, and develop professional competence.
Supervision is a formal process in which a qualified or trainee practitioner presents client work to a qualified supervisor for discussion and reflective learning to enhance their practice. It may be conducted one-to-one or in groups. For trainees, supervision should regularly include live, audio, or video-recorded client sessions.
The primary purpose of supervision is to develop the supervisee’s skills, competence, and confidence to ensure the best outcomes for clients. Supervision also serves as a safeguard, helping to identify situations, such as burnout, where a supervisee’s physical, mental, or emotional state may make client work inappropriate.
