Dr Sue Whitcombe is a Counselling Psychologist with extensive experience across adult community mental health, primary care, school and university-based services, independent practice, and the third sector. Her clinical and consultancy work spans domestic abuse and family violence, working with conflict in separated families, life transitions, and working with men and boys. She is a recognised expert witness and consultant to law, health, and social care professionals. Sue has held senior leadership roles within the British Psychological Society, including as former Chair of the Division of Counselling Psychology, the Division of Counselling Psychology (Wales), and the BPS Training Committee in Counselling Psychology. She co-authored the BPS Guidance on the Use of Psychologists as Expert Witnesses in the Family Courts in England and Wales. Her current research interests include men and boys’ life experiences; life transitions; family violence; the intersection of family law, social care and psychology; language and authenticity in therapy; humour in therapy; and genitourinary and female-specific cancers. These latter interests inform an emerging strand of practice-based inquiry into stand-up comedy as a therapeutic and autoethnographic medium, drawing on her own work developing a comedy show exploring cancer, sex, and ageing.
