Metanoia Research Spotlight: September 2026

A round up of research activity from Metanoia staff and students in September

There has been plenty of exciting research activity from our staff and students over the last few weeks, and we’re delighted to share a few highlights with you.

Sam Clark – Children, Young People & Families

Senior Lecturer Sam Clark has had an article published in the BACP’s Children, Young People & Families journal.

In the article, Sam explores the diverse ways young people understand and express gender, sexuality, relationships and sex, drawing on Channel 4’s Virgin Island as a point of reference.

It’s fantastic to see Sam contributing expertise an to important conversations across the counselling and psychotherapy profession.

William Njoki – ‘Zamani’

We’d like to congratulate Metanoia student William Njoki, who was featured in October 2027’s edition of Therapy Today with his article ‘Zamani’.

In the article, William explores how our present-day experiences can carry echoes of family, culture and history across generations. Drawing on his own Kenyan family history, the work of African philosopher John S Mbiti, and his person-centred training, he considers how therapists might make space for these wider influences without imposing meaning on a client’s experience.

At its heart is a powerful question: can therapy remain firmly rooted in the present while also making room for the familial, cultural and historical past that surrounds us?

William also reflects on collaboration as an ethical safeguard, ensuring that when therapists explore family, cultural or historical meanings, the client remains the author of their own story.

A thoughtful and thought-provoking contribution from one of our students, bringing African philosophy into conversation with contemporary therapeutic practice – congratulations William!

Dr Giovanna Bucci, Dr Michelle Ruger, & Dr Alistair McBeath – Therapy Today Research Digest

We’re also delighted to see research by three Metanoia Institute colleagues, Dr Giovanna Bucci, Dr Michelle Ruger and Dr Alistair McBeath, featured in this month’s Therapy Today Research Digest.

Their paper explores the experiences of European counselling psychology and psychotherapy trainees living and working in the UK after Brexit.

The research highlights how uncertainty around personal and professional safety, fears of exposure to racism and ‘othering’, and feelings of inadequacy can affect trainees’ experiences of belonging. It also considers the important role training institutions and professional bodies can play in supporting international trainees and creating safer, more inclusive environments.

A fantastic contribution to an important and timely conversation within the profession. Congratulations Giovanna, Michelle and Alistair!
