The Doctorate in Counselling Psychology and Psychotherapy by Professional Studies (DCPsych) is a rigorous programme that combines professional training in counselling psychology with an advanced understanding and practice of psychotherapy. On qualifying, students are awarded a dual qualification as both UKCP registered psychotherapists and BPS/ HCPC registered counselling psychologists.

Rooted in humanistic, psychodynamic, and integrative approaches, the programme uniquely prepares students to work therapeutically across diverse client groups and settings, including the NHS, industry, third sector, private practice, academic and research roles, and many others.

This programme fosters critical self-reflection, clinical expertise, and the development of a unique therapeutic style. It places emphasis on understanding human behaviour within therapeutic relationships and broader social contexts and incorporates both verbal and non-verbal therapeutic modalities. Candidates engage with complex psychological phenomena, including trauma, attachment, and relational dynamics, supporting their growth as autonomous, reflective practitioners.

Course Philosophy

Our training is rooted in relational models of Counselling Psychology practice. The programme incorporates relational psychodynamic models, humanistic and systemic perspectives, and 2^nd and 3^rd wave Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. You will also be introduced to expressive and creative therapies. In this way, the training equips you with the knowledge to develop your own personal integrative model based on these approaches. In addition, the programme is underpinned by practitioner-researcher philosophy and comprises an innovative design which seeks to integrate research and practice at doctoral level. Research training is included in and throughout the programme.

Teaching Methods

Teaching occurs through monthly intensive training weekends, where theoretical learning is enriched through small-group discussions and experiential exercises. Skills are practised through role-play and supervised clinical practice, with reflective group sessions encouraging self-awareness. Regular Group Process sessions are held to deepen personal insight and relational understanding.

Clinical Placements, Personal Therapy, and Supervision

Clinical placements are arranged through the Metanoia Institute’s Placement Coordinator, including opportunities at Metanoia’s in-house counselling and psychotherapy services and NHS-affiliated sites. Clinical placements include at least 450 hours of supervised practice. Students must complete 160 hours of personal therapy throughout the programme, along with a minimum of 80 hours of clinical supervision. Mental Health Familiarisation, consisting of 140 hours, provides additional exposure to diverse clinical settings.

Craig is a HCPC Registered and BPS Chartered Counselling Psychologist, UKCP Registered Integrative Psychotherapist, EMDR Therapist, and Clinical Supervisor. His Doctorate research explored the experience of Moral Injury among psychological therapists working in NHS Talking Therapies. Craig has a wide range of clinical experience working across primary care, secondary care, and charity sectors. One of his proudest accomplishments was leading the development of a low-cost counselling service to support those with low incomes to access longer-term therapy. As part of this he supervised and managed a team of therapists over the course of three years before moving to his current role as a Counselling Psychologist and Psychotherapist in an Acute NHS Psychiatric Hospital. Craig also has an independent practice where he provides psychotherapy, supervision, and expert witness reports. Clinically, Craig is passionate about working with complex trauma. Although he is integrative, he has a keen interest in EMDR, psychodynamic psychotherapy, and the art and science of formulation. He has gained much experience with managing risk and working with complex and enduring mental health difficulties such as psychosis, PTSD, bipolar, dissociative disorders, and personality disorders. With this, he maintains a great interest in research, and in particular the philosophical assumptions underpinning clinical practice and the social sciences. He would describe himself as a Critical Realist but maintains a great curiosity for other ways of conceptualising the nature of reality and how we come to know it.

Dr Giovanna Bucci

Dr Giovanna (Gio) Bucci is an HCPC-registered Counselling Psychologist, UKCP-registered Integrative Psychotherapist, and Senior Lecturer on the Doctorate in Counselling Psychology and Psychotherapy (DCPsych) programme at the Metanoia Institute. She holds a PhD in Molecular Medicine applied to Neuroscience from the University of Siena, completed in collaboration with the National Research Council of Italy; an MSc in Psychology from Oxford Brookes University; and a Doctorate in Counselling Psychology and Psychotherapy from the Metanoia Institute. Gio’s academic and clinical career bridges neuroscience, psychology, and psychotherapy. She has conducted quantitative neuroscience research at internationally recognised institutions, including the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and the University of Oxford, contributing to publications in leading peer-reviewed journals such as Nature Communications, Cell, and The Journal of Neuroscience. This scientific background continues to inform her interest in the relationship between neuroscience and psychotherapy. Her move into counselling psychology broadened her research interests towards the ways in which lived experience and psychological wellbeing are shaped by wider social, cultural, and political contexts. Her current work draws primarily on qualitative and mixed-methods approaches to explore language and culture, diversity and inclusion, neurodiversity, and their implications for professional practice. She is also interested in emerging developments in psychotherapy, from online therapeutic work to the different ways in which artificial intelligence may be used within clinical practice. Alongside her academic role, Gio maintains a private practice in Oxford, where she works with adults experiencing trauma, anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, and life transitions. Her clinical interests include exploring how past experiences continue to shape the present, the role of embodiment in psychological experience, and how insights from neuroscience and psychotherapy can be integrated to support psychological growth and lasting change

Dr Michelle Ruger

Dr Ruger is a Counselling Psychologist and Senior Lecturer on the Doctorate in Counselling Psychology (DCPsych) at Metanoia Institute. She currently teaches on the clinical components of the training and previously served as a module leader for research modules. Alongside her academic role, Dr Ruger runs an independent psychotherapy practice, working with individuals, couples, and groups. She undertook further specialist training at the Institute of Group Analysis, and her clinical, teaching, and supervisory work is strongly informed by psychodynamic and group analytic theory. Within the NHS, Dr Ruger is the Lead Psychologist for the Intensive Care Unit of a county hospital in the South East of England. Her clinical work focuses on the psychological impact of critical illness and medical trauma, supporting patients and families following life-threatening medical events, prolonged intensive care admissions, and complex recoveries. In addition to direct clinical work, she facilitates reflective practice groups and psychologically informed interventions for multidisciplinary staff teams, including doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals, with a particular interest in the emotional impact of healthcare work and the relational dynamics of clinical teams. Prior to her work in critical care, Dr Ruger worked more broadly across physical health services, including chronic pain, bariatric, rheumatology, and audiology settings, supporting individuals living with long-term health conditions and the psychological challenges associated with illness, disability, adjustment, and loss. Her research interests have evolved over time. Earlier research focused on psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy, while her more recent interests centre on the processes of psychological change in psychodynamic psychotherapy. As a research supervisor, she has developed a particular interest in unconscious resistance in psychotherapy, psychosomatic experience and the symbolic communication of distress through the body, women’s experiences of pleasure and how to work with and attend to the menstrual cycle in psychotherapeutic work. More recently, she has become interested in the therapist’s experience of working with narcissistic presentations, including countertransference processes, enactment, and the emotional impact of this work on clinicians both within and beyond the therapeutic encounter.

Dr Penny Osborne

Dr Penny Osborne is a registered dance movement psychotherapist, graduate psychologist, and academic with an integrative approach to therapy, supervision, teaching, and research. Drawing on person-centred, gestalt, embodied, behavioural, and creative approaches, to supports clients' social, emotional, and psychological wellbeing. With over 20 years of experience, she has worked with adults, children, and adolescents in educational and residential contexts, outpatient services, addiction counselling, and online support for looked-after children, carers, and siblings. Her areas of expertise include trauma, anxiety, developmental disorders, chronic illness, and medically unexplained symptoms. Her research portfolio spans qualitative and quantitative methodologies, with particular interest in embodied psychology, phenomenology, and artistic inquiry. Her master’s research examined anxiety through contemplative skillsets and phenomenological analysis, while her doctoral thesis explored the experiences of therapists working online using expressive and creative techniques. She continues to focus on embodied and creative research methods, including autoethnography, poetic transcription, and phenomenological inquiry, with applications in disability, difference, trauma, life transitions, and health and social care. Alongside clinical and research practice, Penny lectures at Metanoia and Middlesex University. She has presented at doctoral seminars and academic conferences and is passionate about co-created meaning in therapy and research, integrating lived experience with embodied approaches to deepen understanding and practice

Dr Chnanis Ladha

Dr Ladha is a Senior Lecturer and Research Supervisor on the Doctorate in Counselling Psychology (DCPsych) programme at Metanoia Institute, where she leads teaching and supports doctoral researchers in developing rigorous, reflective, and clinically meaningful research. She also contributes to research ethics review and academic supervision across the programme. Chnanis is an Integrative Psychotherapist, Senior Accredited member of the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society (NCPS), and a registered clinical member of the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP), bringing over a decade of experience across clinical practice, higher education, and research. Her clinical work is grounded in person-centred and psychodynamic principles and informed by trauma-aware and embodied approaches, with attention to both conscious and subconscious processes in facilitating therapeutic change. She holds a Doctorate in Health from the University of Bath, where her doctoral research explored psychotherapeutic interventions for mental health and wellbeing using mixed-methods. Her broader research interests include psychotherapy process and outcome, wellbeing and flourishing, positive psychology, psychosomatic and holistic health, embodiment, and the therapeutic relationship. Through her teaching, supervision, and scholarship, Chnanis aims to cultivate curiosity, critical thinking, and thoughtful engagement with research that informs practice and contributes to the advancement of counselling psychology and psychotherapy.

Dr Agatha Benyera-Mararike

Dr Agatha Benyera-Mararike is a Chartered Counselling Psychologist, Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society, HCPC-registered practitioner psychologist, BPS Registered Applied Psychology Practice Supervisor, UKCP-registered psychotherapist and a Higher Education Academy Fellow. She qualified in Counselling Psychology in 2006 and has extensive experience in higher education, clinical practice, supervision and medico-legal work. Her roles include Senior Lecturer, external examiner, expert witness and Senior Counselling Psychologist within an NHS acute mental health service. She has several publications and conference presentations. Dr Benyera-Mararike is an integrative therapist who works existentially. She is also a fully trained and experienced EMDR therapist. Her counselling psychology expertise and research interests include trauma, culturally responsive practice, perinatal and HIV mental health, psychosexual and couple/relationship therapy, neurodiversity, acute and forensic mental health, bereavement, migration, refugee experiences, community development and women’s health. As a registered midwifery lecturer and practitioner, she also has over 29 years of clinical midwifery experience in consultant-led NHS units and a private London hospital. Her work has included high-risk pregnancy, antenatal screening, long-term health conditions, and supporting vulnerable and migrant women affected by domestic abuse, female genital mutilation and sexual violence. She also acquired more than 16 years’ experience in community development and establishing vibrant women’s health and empowerment initiatives, particularly within African and other migrant communities in the UK. As a trained expert witness has prepared almost 400 medico-legal reports across family, criminal, immigration, civil, personal injury and midwifery clinical negligence matters with highly valued court opinion.

Dr Ariana Jordan

Dr Ariana Jordan is a senior counselling psychologist, registered with the British Psychological Society and Health and Care Professions Council. She joined Metanoia Institute in April 2019 and has served in various roles, including Placement Coordinator, Senior Lecturer (research) and Head of Programme. She is currently Senior Lecturer and Research Supervision Coordinator. Before completing her Doctorate in Counselling Psychology in 2018, Ariana studied Psychoanalytic Developmental Psychotherapy at the Anna Freud Centre/UCL, Systemic Practice with Families and Couples at the Institute of Family Therapy/ Birkbeck College and Dance Therapy with the Association of Dance Therapists International. In her private practice, Ariana works with adults as well as young people, providing therapy for individuals, couples and families. Additionally, Ariana is a Senior Counselling Psychologist within the NHS, working with adults with learning difficulties and autism. Ariana’s research interests include self-identity and psychological wellbeing at midlife, and masked autism traits, particularly in women and girls. She recently led a BACP funded project on the use of avatars in therapy with autistic adults from Black and global majority communities and was co-researcher in a case study project looking at long term emotion-focussed therapy. Ariana runs two monthly groups for adults and young people on the autistic spectrum and founded Croydon Psychologists’ Film Club. She is also a clinical supervisor.

Dr Sushila Barton-King

Senior Lecturer and Year 1 Lead, DCPsych

Sushila is a Chartered Counselling Psychologist and an Integrative Psychotherapist. She completed her Doctorate in Counselling Psychology and Psychotherapy by Professional Studies (DCPsych) at the Metanoia Institute/Middlesex University, where she conducted doctoral research on the psychological impact of COVID-19 lockdowns on professional actors using Reflexive Thematic Analysis. Alongside teaching on the DCPsych course, Sushila works in private practice in Tottenham North London where she provides therapeutic support to adults presenting with a range of mental health issues. Sushila’s integrative therapeutic approach is primarily informed by Psychodynamic, and Humanistic theories to support clients as they explore past and present challenges. She also draws on neuroscience concerning the relationship between mind, body and brain in understanding the connection between physical responses and emotional or psychological distress. Sushila works extensively with clients who have received a diagnosis of autism and is committed to developing a style of therapy that is accessible, sustainable and effective when working with neurodivergence. Sushila has over 15 years’ experience working privately as a Biology, Chemistry and English tutor in the UK and abroad, primarily with students in alternative provisions. Prior to her training in psychology, she trained and worked as a professional actress in London and New York. She continues to work as a musician and singer songwriter and has a keen interest in the psychological role of creativity.

Dr Nomsa-Sadra Wayland

Dr Nomsa-Sandra Wayland is a Chartered Counselling Psychologist and Senior Lecturer on the ProfDoc in Counselling Psychology and Psychotherapy at Metanoia Institute, where she contributes to several modules. She is also a Lecturer and Clinical Tutor on the DClinPsy at UEL. She brings together experience across clinical practice, higher education, research, supervision and professional training, grounded in a relational and Ubuntu-informed understanding of psychology. Nomsa has clinical experience in NHS mental health services and private practice, and has taught across undergraduate, master’s and doctoral programmes. Her approach to education and supervision is relational and reflective, with particular attention to how culture, identity, power, belonging and lived experience shape therapeutic relationships, learning, supervision and the production of psychological knowledge. Her research interests include the experiences of minoritised and culturally diverse communities, race-based traumatic stress, racial microaggressions, decolonising therapeutic practice, moral injury, epistemic justice and culturally responsive practice. A central thread in her work is the question of whose knowledge is recognised as legitimate in psychology and psychotherapy, and how culturally situated and historically informed perspectives can contribute to more inclusive and socially just practice, research and professional education. Methodologically, Nomsa is particularly interested in qualitative and experiential approaches, including IPA, TA and reflexive qualitative methodologies. Her developing scholarship explores relational and Ubuntu-informed approaches to research, reflection, supervision, education and therapeutic practice, drawing on communal understandings of personhood to critically engage with predominantly individualistic Western psychological frameworks and create space for multiple ways of knowing. More broadly, Nomsa’s work is underpinned by a commitment to developing psychologically informed spaces in which multiple ways of knowing can coexist and contribute to knowledge creation. She is particularly interested in supporting practitioners and researchers to engage critically and reflexively with questions of culture, difference, power and positionality, while developing therapeutic and research practices that are ethically responsible, culturally attuned and responsive to the communities they serve.

Dr Letticia Banton

Dr Letticia Banton is a clinical integrative psychotherapist (UKCP) and chartered counselling psychologist (HCPC, BPS). She trained at the Metanoia Institute. Her clinical and academic work is rooted in a genuine interest in people, and she seeks to bring a sensitive and relational depth- approach. Letticia draws primarily on psychodynamic, relational psychoanalytic and Gestalt ideas in her therapeutic approach. She has clinical experience both privately and in the third sector, including most recently as Clinical Manager for an affordable psychoanalytic community clinic, overseeing a team of trainee therapists from a range of training programmes in London. For the past few years, she has also consulted for and facilitated on CPD programmes at Tavistock Relationships and Confer. In addition to teaching, she now runs a private practice in East London. She is also continuing her own psychoanalysis and studies in Jungian Analysis. Letticia’s doctoral research explored how women experience the menstrual cycle in psychotherapy, unpacking its psychological, phenomenological and relational significance. Her broader clinical and research interests include a focus on gender, and she has a decade of clinical experience working with trans and non-binary people. She conducted IPA research into the lived experience of heterosexual cross-dressing men as part of an MSc in Psychological Sciences at Birkbeck College, University of London. As an undergraduate she read Modern History at the University of Oxford.

Entry Requirements

Academic eligibility requirements

A 2:1 (or higher) degree in psychology with Graduate Basis for Chartership (GBC) from the British Psychological Society (BPS)
If a candidate has a 2:2 in psychology undergrad, then they must have a master’s degree in psychology at a pass level or above.
If a candidate has a non-psychology undergraduate degree, regardless of grade, they must have a 2:1 or merit or above in a psychology conversion.
Academic grades outside of this will not be accepted.

Mental health experience

Applicants must have a minimum of either 6 months full time or 1 year part time in mental health, counselling, clinical or therapeutic work that includes some in-person face to face therapeutic contact. Online experience is also accepted, provided there is some in-person experience also.

Experience can be paid or voluntary. Please note an applicant’s experience must go beyond befriending or mentoring. Experience outside of mental health will not be considered.

Counselling skills training

Successful completion of a qualification in counselling skills training (min 35 hours) such as a certificate or diploma level.

Counselling skills training must include practical skills experience such as role plays and must include at least one therapeutic model taught on the DCPsych (e.g. CBT, humanistic, psychodynamic). It also must be a live, taught course.

Applicants must have the right to live, work and study in the UK at the time of application. Clinical Placements must be undertaken within the UK and supervisors must be registered with a UK-based professional body.
